Shillong, Oct 11: An emergent Joint Executive Committee of the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association and the Shillong Bar Association on Thursday withdrew its resolution dated September 30 calling for abstention from judicial work.
However, the committee said the decision should not be misunderstood as surrender or dilution of demand.
“The demand for removal of Amit Kumar as Advocate General remains firm, unequivocal and non-negotiable,” the joint committee said.
The decision was taken after acknowledging concerns shared by general members and on receipt of formal resolutions dated October 9 passed by the Executive Committees of Jowai and Nongstoin Bar Associations regarding continuation of abstention and its adverse effect on members, courts and litigants.
After threadbare discussion, the Joint Committee resolved to withdraw the abstention with immediate effect and requested all members to resume normal court work from the next working day.
It said the committee remains fully committed to intensifying its peaceful movement until the demand is fulfilled and will adopt a more sustained and intensified mode of agitation, which will be notified in due course.
The committee reiterated that the cause concerns the integrity, dignity and welfare of every legal professional, the independence of the Bar and interest of the public.
“The abstention from work has been called off, but the movement continues with greater resolve,” the resolution said, adding that secretaries will notify Bar Associations in all districts.
