Peeved with the border settlement between Assam and Meghalaya, people of several villages under Hima Mylliem in Raid Marwet today protested the decision to handover many portions of land to Assam, which they claim legally belong to Meghalaya.
The protest was held at Maikhuli village on the interstate border.
Villagers and leaders of Maikhuli and other border villages protested against the border settlement as they are not satisfied with the decision to hand over their land to Assam. The villagers received support from several pressure groups, such as the Meghalaya People and Social Organization (MPSO) and Confederation of Ri Bhoi People (CoRP).
A meeting in this regard was followed with a rally to a pond belonging to the village, which was constructed by the Meghalaya government, that is reportedly going to be transferred to Assam.
A magistrate and police rushed to the spot in order to control the law and order situation. The villagers resolved to stand firm in rejecting the border deal as it stands now.
They also expressed their perplexion at the need to shift the pond to Assam’s jurisdiction as they said that there had never been a dispute over it.
