The Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong Border Area of the dispute Block 2 region expressed its gratitude to the Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner and police service for ensuring that voting could take place there yesterday in the Meghalaya Assembly election.
Block 2 is in dispute between Meghalaya and Assam and has been for decades.
Tight security was provided and the district administration coordinated with its counterparts in Assam to make sure that the vote could go off smoothly without hindrance.
Speaking to reporters today, the president of the Synjuk, Blikshon Sohtun, said that the people of Block 2 are satisfied with the arrangements that were made.
“Due to the initiative of the district administration and the office of the Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police, the election in Block 2 was conducted in a very smooth manner and no untoward incidents were reported until the end of polling,” Sohtun said, adding that this is the first time the police from both Assam and Meghalaya worked together to maintain peace and tranquility.
Prior to the polls, an MLA in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district threatened not to allow any voters in Block 2 cast their vote in Meghalaya. This spurred action at all levels between the two states in order that no one was prevented from exercising their franchise.
