Shillong, Jul 18: In a celebration of regional artistry and history, A·chik Theatre, Tura staged the premiere of its production ‘A·chik A·song-II’ at the Tura district auditorium recently.
Directed by Balsrame A. Sangma, the one-hour multilingual play — performed in Garo, English, Assamese, and Bengali — drew a full house. The production depicted the life and legal struggle of legendary Garo freedom fighter Pa Sonaram Rongrokgre Sangma, highlighting his campaign against land alienation, forced Begar labour, arbitrary Nazarana taxes, and British encroachment on customary forest rights.
The performance was presented under the National Theatre Festival 2026, organised by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi in collaboration with the Department of Arts & Culture.
The event coincided with Mahakavi Kalidasa Jayanti and marked 150 Years of Vande Mataram.
The evening was graced by Chief Guest Dr. Crystal Cornelious D. Marak, Member of the General Council of Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, along with dignitaries, officials, and local elders.
