The office of the District Social Welfare Officer of West Jaintia Hills organised a bike rally here yesterday under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan campaign to raise awareness about the harmful effects of drugs.
The rally was flagged off by Additional Superintendent of Police Ishan Gupta from the District Library in Mynthong. The rally covered many parts of Jowai before ending in Wahiarong, Mihmyntdu spreading the message of a drug-free society.
Gupta noted that while various government departments and organisations are actively playing their part in combating this issue, it is equally important for communities to step forward and become ambassadors of change.
Meghalaya, particularly the Jaintia Hills region, has gone from being a transit route for drugs from other North East states and Myanmar to mainland India to also becoming a consumer state.
Gupta said that the state, and Jaintia Hills in particular, is richly blessed by nature with peace, beauty and a vibrant cultural heritage. The people of this land should cherish and celebrate these blessings by embracing clean, healthy lifestyles rooted in tradition, not through the use of harmful substances, he added.
