Badonkupar Synnah gave the home fans plenty to cheer about as he won his light welterweight 60-63.5kg fight on the second day of the 7th Elite Men’s National Boxing Championship at the SAI Indoor Hall here today.

The championship, which will conclude on 1 December, is being organised by the Meghalaya Boxing Association in collaboration with the Boxing Federation of India and sponsored by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya.

Synnah, who was up against Roopesh Shukla of Madhya Pradesh, won the bout on points in which he was cheered on vociferously by the spectators. He thus became the first Meghalaya boxer to progress to the next round.

The second day saw 78 bouts with boxers from around the country looking to make it through to the next rounds and closer to their goal of a medal.

In action were a number of star Indian pugilists, like South Asian Games gold medallist Sachin of Services fighting in the 54-57kg featherweight category against Vishal Kumar of Punjab, which the former dominated and won on points.

2019 Asian Championship silver medallist Ashish Kumar of Himachal Pradesh went up against Manipur’s Kingson in the featherweight as well, but this was a real battle as the two threw hard-hitting punches across three rounds, with Kumar winning the bout on split decision.

Other Meghalayan boxers involved today included Kordor Marwein in the lightweight 57-60kg category. He lost to Aditya Nagar of Uttar Pradesh after the referee stopped the fight in the first round as the UP fighter outmatched his opponent with a flurry of blows.

In the 48-51kg flyweight, Khrawbok Marwein was up against Bihar’s Shiv Kant. Although he was knocked to the floor once, he picked himself up but the decision went against him on points.
