The Central Bureau of Communication, Shillong, recently organised two awareness programmes on the harmful effects of substance abuse and the importance of cleanliness in Pathaw and Markasa villages, Eastern West Khasi Hills.
The programmes, held under the banner of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and Swachhata Hi Seva, aimed to educate participants on the growing issue of substance abuse, associated health hazards and the importance of maintaining cleanliness and sanitation.
Dr LSL Kharkongor, the official in charge of Parïong primary health centre, emphasised the urgent need for holistic approaches to address substance abuse, prioritising rehabilitation, prevention and awareness campaigns.
“Drug abuse is not just an individual problem, it affects families, communities and society as a whole,” Dr Kharkongor said.
E Marbaniang, Sub-Inspector of Mairang Police Station, discussed the ill effects of drug abuse, legal punishments and the need for parental vigilance. “The side effects of drug abuse have a direct impact on our physical and mental health,” he said.
Marbaniang added that for the eradication of the drug menace from society, public cooperation is necessary and stressed upon the participants to share all such information related to drug addicts as well as drug peddling in their respective areas so that police can act swiftly.
Susanna L Lyngkhoi, Block Coordinator SBMG Mawthadraishan Block, highlighted the importance of stopping plastic waste burning, digging soak pits for sewage disposal and individual responsibility in maintaining cleanliness.
The programmes included dance and quiz competitions, with winners receiving cash prizes. A plantation drive was also undertaken under the banner Ek Per Maa Ke Naam, followed by a short cleaning drive.
