Officials from the Labour Department and police today conducted inspections of migrant labourers at factories within the MIDC Umiam Industrial Area.
The inspection was conducted in collaboration with Umiam Dorbar Shnong leaders. It was found that many labourers were engaged in work without proper documentation and had not undergone police verification.
Addressing the media, Umiam Headman Stevenson Kharkrang appreciated the joint efforts of government and police to monitor illegal migrant workers in the industrial area. However, he expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of action against those found without valid paperwork.
The Dorbar Shnong is concerned by illegal migrant workers in the Umiam Industrial Area and called for the implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act through the District Task Force to prevent further influx of illegal migrant workers.
