DINDAM, an organisation based in Garo Hills, has complained to the authorities about hawkers from Assam who are allegedly acting as doctors and pharmacists at weekly markets in various parts of the region.
Incredibly, the hawkers reportedly have Trading by Non-Tribal (TNT) licences from the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council GHADC.
DINDAM said that the GHADC has shown “neglect and apathy” in this matter. Specifically, the organisation was informed about the sale of medicines by hawkers in Garobadha and went to investigate.
At the village, there were several hawkers, mostly from Mankachar in Assam, who were “openly selling medicines, acting as doctors and recommending medicines for various ailments to the unknowing public.”
It added that it believes that the GHADC’s taxation department “is working hand in glove with these illegal vendors” and needs to be punished.
