The State government would press with the new government at the Centre for special status to NEIGRIHMS.
The State government wanted NEIGRIHMS to get the tag of Institute of National Importance (INI) or the status of AIIMS.
Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh who held a review meeting with top officials of the department said that a delegation from the State Health Department would meet Union Health Minister J P Nadda next week to raise the issue including other requirements of NEIGRIHMS.
Lyngdoh also said that the State government would take up the matter pertaining to operationalisation of the Cancer Research Centre in NEIGRIHMS.
In addition, the government also wants a special quota for students of Meghalaya in the seats for post graduate studies in NEIGRIHMS.
“We want to discuss the matter about having a special provision to have a special quota for our doctors to study PG courses in NEIGRIHMS as the institute is located in Meghalaya and additional focus should be given to Meghalaya,” Lyngdoh added.
According to her, the issue of exodus of medical professionals from Meghalaya would be discussed in the meeting with the Union Health Ministry scheduled for next week.
