The Mawryngkneng circle of the Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) has come out against the proposal to set up a garbage dump at Nonghali village in East Khasi Hills.
The plan is to relieve the Marten landfill, which serves Shillong but is also close to breaking point.
A public meeting is scheduled to be held on July 6, with villagers to decide whether to go ahead with the project or not. HITO is in favour of the public meeting and will support the villagers’ decision, the pressure group’s local president, Gary S Myrboh, said.
HITO, however, is worried about the villagers and the nearby Umkhen River if the garbage dump is approved. The government should not take any hasty decision on the matter but only move after considering environmental laws and the nearby farms and river.
