After a barrage by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma holding the privately owned University of Science and Technology (USTM) located in Meghalaya responsible for inundation in Guwahati, both the states have decided to form a joint committee.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said he had verbally communicated with his counterpart and spoke about the concerns and an official communication was also received from the neighbouring state.
He said the committee will be constituted in a weeks’ time. “Both the chief secretaries are in touch to formalise the formation of this committee and all these concerns will be taken up and we are hopeful that we will be able to resolve most of the issues,” he added.
Sarma had communally-tinged statements partially blaming “flood Jihad” from the university on inundation of Guwahati’s roads and remarked that the university’s gates with “Mecca-like” three domes for “destroying the education system”.
Not stopping at that, the Assam CM upped his attack on USTM and suggested that students who graduate from the varsity not be eligible to compete for posts advertised by the Assam government.
Sangma said, “We will look into all the aspects of concerns that have been raised by Assam and others and in that we will take up the other matters also.”
