The Meghalaya unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a right-wing students’ organisation affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), celebrated 75 years since the foundation of the national body.
The Amrit Mahotsav programme, one of many held across the country, provided a platform for current members and ex-members to unite and celebrate the organisation’s work.
More than 100 karyakartas attended, while former members were felicitated. These included the late Sitimon Sawian, described as a pioneer of the ABVP in Meghalaya.
The chief guest on the day was BK Dey Sawian, a former top police official, who spoke about the contributions of the founding members of the ABVP and the challenges and obstacles faced during the early days of working for the organisation.
Also present was Prof Milind Marathe, a former national president of the ABVP and current chairman of the National Book Trust.
He mentioned the five philosophies of the ABVP, importance of being Indian first and foremost and the contributions of the founding members of the ABVP in Meghalaya.
