Shillong, Aug 4: Police today arrested a suspected drug dealer and his associate while they were on their way to Shillong from Silchar.
A joint team comprising the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) and West Jaintia Hills police conducted a coordinated vehicle checking operation under the jurisdiction of Jowai Police Station. One Milton Chakraborty, alias Lucky, along with his associate Kasimuddin were detained and 52.02g of heroin was recovered from their possession.
According to the West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, the ANTF received reliable intelligence yesterday at around 11pm that Chakraborty and Kasimuddin were traveling from Silchar to Shillong on a Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) bus with illegal narcotics.
It was only on Sunday that two residents of East Khasi Hills were arrested in similar circumstances with 23.24g of heroin while travelling in an MTC bus from Silchar to Shillong. The identities of those two suspects were not revealed by police and it is unknown whether the two cases are linked.
At 4am today morning, the bus (ML 03 0189) was intercepted at Mihmyntdu and a search was conducted in the presence of independent witnesses. Two soap cases containing suspected heroin were recovered from Kasimuddin’s possession, one of which was hidden in his underwear.
Another three soap cases wrapped in black plastic were recovered from Chakraborty’s underwear. After testing positive for heroin, the contraband was sealed and seized in the presence of two independent witnesses, as mandated under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
A case has been registered at Jowai Police Station. Further investigations are underway to uncover more of the drug supply network.
