North Garo Hills (NGH) Police have arrested one Sonjith Arengh, the primary suspect in the recent abduction of a minor girl from the Kharkutta region on July 18.
Arengh, a repeat offender with a history of serious crimes under the POCSO Act, had been evading arrest since the incident.
He was apprehended by villagers in Adokgre Mitegitim on Thursday and handed over to the police.
According to police, Arengh had spent the night of July 22 in Rongjeng and moved to Adokgre Mitegitim the next day. A police team had raided Mitegitim on July 23, but Arengh managed to flee, leaving behind his belongings.
The suspect is currently in custody at Kharkutta Police Station and is being interrogated.
Police said he will be produced before the court on July 25.
Sources revealed that Arengh was booked in a POCSO case in 2017 and was out on bail while facing trial in the District Court at the time of the current incident.
