Five suspected drug users were detained by Ri-Bhoi police in an operation on Thursday evening, part of the force’s efforts to combat drug smuggling and illegal drug use in the district.
According to Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jason Mairom, the five individuals, whose names have been withheld, were apprehended during a search operation at Umshangling junction at around 6pm yesterday. Acting on specific intelligence, the police intercepted an auto-rickshaw. However, no contraband drugs were found in the vehicle or in the possession of the five. However, cash and syringes were recovered, strongly suggesting that the five local youths were involved in drugs.
“The detained individuals were taken to the police station for further investigation, and their families were subsequently informed. They also underwent counseling as part of the intervention process,” Mairom stated.
Additionally, he urged families and individuals struggling with drug addiction to seek assistance. He highlighted the availability of support services, including the One Stop Centre at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, rehabilitation centres and the Social Welfare Department.
“The police are always ready to help those willing to recover from addiction. However, those who persist in illegal drug activities will face strict legal action, as Ri-Bhoi police remain vigilant in their mission to curb drug smuggling,” the ASP concluded.
