Three members of a family narrowly escaped death in Shangbangla village, located along the National Highway 6 in Ri Bhoi district, when a landslide buried their home and a shop after heavy rain.
The family was inside their house last night, when the landslide hit, destroying their home at around 8 pm.
The house and shop that belongs to one Teiborlang Wahlang, sustained significant damage as all belongings and produce sold were buried in mud.
Rangbah Shnong of Shangbangla, Bishos Lawriniang said the downpour that lasted for about three hours. He said there are about 20 families living at the foot of the hills along the highway and are at risk of landslide if there is continuous rain that might result in casualties.
He urged the government to find ways and means and take necessary measures to ensure the safety of residents.
