The Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM), Nengkra sub-unit has written to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari over the delayed construction of NH-217 road from Dudnoi to Dalu via Baghmara in South Garo Hills district.
The organisation said the delay has been causing immense hardship to the people of the State and its deplorable condition, particularly in the district, has severely affected various stakeholders, including business communities, school children, and travellers from adjacent areas.
The national highway which serves an important link between Assam and Meghalaya’s North, East and South Garo Hills districts, has become treacherous and impassable especially during the rainy season, AHAM said.
The organisation urged the union minister to direct the concerned authorities to take immediate action to expedite the construction of the road, by furnishing a comprehensive report on the project’s status and identifying the bottlenecks causing the delay and to take corrective measures to remove such impediments and ensure timely completion of the project.
“Its timely execution would confer significant benefits upon the public and various travellers who traverse this route for business and occupational purposes. Furthermore, the residents of South Garo Hills, who are entirely dependent on NH-217 for their transportation needs, would also substantially gain from the prompt completion of this project,” AHAM urged.
