Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon has urged the Centre to introduce the Health Institutions of National Importance Bill 2023 at the earliest in Parliament.
In his letter to Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda, Syngkon said that he believes that this bill is of critical importance to the people of the North East and will address manifold issues and problems being faced by NEIGRIHMS.
“By introducing this legislation, you will demonstrate your commitment to the aims and vision of the National Health Policy, which seeks to ensure universal access to equitable, affordable and quality health care services, accountable and responsive to people’s needs,” Syngkon stated.
He also said that the bill meets “the 100-day agenda of Modi 3.0” as healthcare is a major area close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Highlighting some challenges being faced by NEIGRIHMS at present, the MP stated that due to a lack of autonomy and overdependence on the central government for decision-making, the institute’s ability to respond to regional healthcare needs has been hindered.
According to him, limited budgetary allocation is impacting research, patient care, infrastructure development and the recruitment of skilled personnel in addition to retaining doctors for the long-term.
“A shortage of skilled medical professionals, including doctors, nurses and technicians is affecting the quality of care provided,” Nadda was told.
Syngkon also said that shortage of medical equipment and supplies lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment, compromising patient outcomes even though NEIGRIHMS deals with a heavy patient load.
His letter also dealt with matters relating to recruitment, sanitation, quality of mattresses and washrooms.
