Social activist Cherian Momin has written to the North Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner seeking urgent attention for the state of the roads and bridges in Resubelpara, the district headquarters.
With heavy rainfall inundating much of Garo Hills, accidents have proliferated, such as an incident where a pick-up truck turned turtle while trying to cross a flooded road.
This road (between Resubelpara and Mendipathar) has become increasingly dangerous and nearly impassable due to the heavy rainfall experienced over the past four days,” Momin said. “This is not an isolated problem but an ongoing one that has significantly hindered the daily commute and transportation of essential goods.”
The community had been placing its hopes on the completion of a bridge as an alternative route, Momin said. “Unfortunately, the construction of this bridge has been pending for the past 15-20 years with no signs of completion in the foreseeable future.”
Given the severity of the situation, Momin urged for immediate steps, including the immediate repair and maintenance of the road connecting Resubelparat to Mendipathar to ensure safe travel for all residents, expedited completion of the bridge to provide a reliable alternative route and implementation of safety measures by disaster management authorities to protect travelers during adverse weather conditions.
