Following various complaints received from members of the public, the East Jaintia Hills unit of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) has filed a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner regarding alleged overcharging by shopkeepers dealing in essential commodities.
The pressure group demanded that the district authorities inspect shops and ensure that the weights used should have a registration seal from the concerned department and with cash memos having the trading licence number, name of the shop and other details.
The KSU further demanded that there should be a District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission as per the Consumer Protection Act 2019 and to conduct consumer awareness programmes.
The KSU said that the DC has assured to take necessary action against such shops charging more than the maximum retail price (MRP).
