The Jaintia Student Union (JSU) has submitted a letter to the Minister of Social Welfare requesting that a drug addiction rehabilitation centre be set up in East Jaintia Hills.
The pressure group said that there is an increasing number of cases of drug addiction, especially among teenagers, in the district.
“The problem related to drug addiction is nothing new in East Jaintia Hills,” the JSU said. “But with each passing day our district has become one of the hotspots of drug users in our state and it seems like there is a surge in the graph of the number of people being drug addicts. The most horrifying part is most of them are teenagers. According to us, today’s kids are extremely stressed about their academics, sports and careers. They have this constant necessity to worry about lagging behind the competition.”
The JSU added that to tackle this menace, a government rehabilitation centre in the district is important so that the unprivileged families can afford the service.
