A 19-year old student suffered injuries on her face while resisting an alleged rape attempt by an unknown person at a forest between Lawbyrtun and Mawkyllei villages in Eastern West Khasi Hills district.
The incident happened yesterday while the student was on her way to school on foot at around 8:30 am. The unknown man forcefully took the girl to the forest area and tried to rape her.
When she tried to resist and raised an alarm, the accused smashed her face with a stone and fled from the scene, police said.
Students passing by from the same road heard her screams and rescued her.
The victim who is unable to speak at the moment has been admitted to a hospital in Shillong.
Police said, they are not on a wild goose chase as the identity of the man has been ascertained. A hunt has been launched to nab the accused who is still at large, police added.
