The state government has been continually following up with the Centre about the demand for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya but there has not been any tangible progress on this front.
That is the gist of what Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said in response to a call attention motion by Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem on the subject in the Assembly today.
Sangma related the history of the demand for ILP from the time of the passage of the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act in late 2019 to today. It was the CAA that led to the most furious protests in favour of ILP in Meghalaya, to which the entire Assembly caved into by passing a unanimous motion in its favour.
As recently as August 8 this year, the CM and his cabinet colleagues met the Prime Minister in New Delhi to submit a memorandum on various issues, including ILP.
