Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has reiterated that actions taken against those involved in the “unprecedented” Tura mob attack is based on evidence alone and decisions will be made after the magisterial probe.
“We will wait for the magisterial inquiry and if necessary then decision can be made for an independent probe,” Sangma told reporters today.
Reportedly West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani in a statement to a Garo based digital media outlet stated, “At this time, we don’t have concrete evidence that this was a pre-planned conspiracy to hurt the Chief Minister,” and that “The movement was hijacked by a few elements with political motives.”
The digital media outlet, however, removed the entire response of the deputy commissioner.
On the statement, the Chief Minister said, “…as far as I know the DC has given a clarification later on and, in that clarification, he has mentioned that he was not fully quoted in terms of what he actually meant…I think it would be good if you speak to him.”
It may be mentioned that 47 persons including members of political parties were arrested by police in connection with the violence in Tura, which according to the state police was a conspiracy to murder the Chief Minister.
There have also been demands from groups in the Garo Hills for an end to Tura violence ‘witch hunt’ and the release of six students who were randomly arrested.
The Garo Students Union in a letter to the Chief Minister said that some of the arrested people were circumstantially present for various reasons as the violence occurred on one of the main road arteries of Tura town.
