Members of the Kharkutta regional unit of the A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) have visited an abandoned residential school building yesterday in the remote village of Imsambal, North Garo Hills, and found that the infrastructure is slowly being reclaimed by nature.
Construction was completed more than 10 years ago, AHAM said in a release today. The school is around 15km away from Kharkutta block.
In expectation that the school would be operationalised, villagers would annually clear away the vegetation that would grow around it and tidy the place up but no government has made use of the infrastructure for its intended purpose.
AHAM declined to blame any particular government but simply wants the school to function. The village has no good educational institutions, it added, and children have to travel the 15km to Kharkutta to get a decent education.
AHAM Kharkutta president Stephen Marak said that building infrastructure only to abandon it is a not uncommon phenomenon in the region, calling it a waste of public money.
