The Jaiñtia Students Movement (JSM), Eastern Region has sought compensation to farmers who lost their livestock due to Lumpy Skin Disease and African Swine Fever.
Reportedly, 29 cows have perished and over 3500 have been infected with lumpy disease in the State.
According to the JSM, the most affected villages in East Jaintia Hills are Pamrakmai, Pamrapaithlu, Wapung Shnong, Sohkymphor, Byrwai, longkaluh, Suchen, Iapmala, Byndihati, Lumshnong.
“Both the disease has affected livestock farmers. As Majority of the affected household are from the poor family background whose income is mainly from cattle and pig rearing, the department should provide compensation to the affected farmers so that they feel a sense of security and protected from the district authority,” JSM in a letter to the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry officer said.
It also urged the department to take the necessary precautions at the earliest to provide prevention, medicine, vaccination and protection before the disease spreads as well as a dedicated help line number.
