The District Magistrate of West Jaintia Hills has banned the manufacture, storage, sale or purchase of nylon or synthetic threads used in the flying of kites in the district as well as the use of Chinese manja, the powdered glass that is traditionally used on the kite strings.
This order has been made to protect human beings and animals from harm as well as preventing environmental pollution.
Violators will be punished under the Environment (Protection) Act 1986,
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, Indian Penal Code and other provisions of the law.
