Acting on a specific tip-off, personnel of the 172nd Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya intercepted a truck yesterday carrying a large quantity of betel nuts near the international border with Bangladesh in East Jaintia Hills.
The consignment was worth Rs 90 lakh, a BSF press release said today, and two people were detained. As they were unable to justify the presence of such a large quantity of betel nuts and as they did not have valid documentation regarding the consignment, the nuts were seized by the border guards.
The detained duo are both residents of Karimganj in Assam. They were coming from the Kalain area when intercepted by the BSF. The two were handed over to Umkiang police station with the seized items for further action.
