Election officials have seized cash amounting to over Rs 51 lakh from across the State after the model code of conduct came into force.
Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Roy Kharkongor today informed that the total cash seizure made has reached Rs 51, 55,900.
The seizures were during the checking conducted as part of implementing the model code of conduct to ensure free and fair elections are held on February 27 in the State.
Today officials seized Rs 16.53 lakh cash in the Garo Hills region. Kharkongor said in West Garo Hills, officials seized Rs 14, 90,900 and nine litres of liquor costing Rs 3,912. In South West Garo Hills, officials seized Rs 65,000 and Rs 98,000 in South Garo Hills district.
As the person carrying the cash could not provide any satisfactory and valid documents for the same the money was seized.
At least 34 Assembly constituencies across the State have been identified as “expenditure sensitive” where cash is likely to be used to buy votes.
