The involvement of scientific practices and different technologies will help meet the state government’s goal of increasing farmers’ incomes in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said today.
Sangma said this during the inauguration of the newly-constructed administrative building of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (farm science centre) at Mawthadraishan, Eastern West Khasi Hills.
Opening the new centre, in the presence of Water Resource Minister Brolding Nongsiej, the CM dedicated the building to the farmers and said it will greatly enhance the functioning of the KVKs in the region in terms of the support that they can give to farmers to take up various activities.
“Farmers make up more than 70 per cent of the population in the state. Most families depend on one or the other form of agriculture for their daily livelihood. Hence, to be able to have a significant impact on the lives of the people of the state, we need to ensure that we are able to put enough investment in agriculture,” Sangma said.
Highlighting his government’s performance, he said that it has introduced various mission mode programmes, such as those to promote jackfruit, mushrooms, turmeric, ginger, aroma oils, spices, etc.
“We are opening up different opportunities for our farming communities,” Sangma added.
Better technology and scientific methods will lead to better yields and therefore higher incomes for farmers, the government hopes.
“This is an age of technology and scientific practices. The KVKs will play a pivotal role in ensuring that proper training is given to the farmers and the right technology is introduced to them,” Sangma said.
