World Population Day was observed in Ri-Bhoi under the theme ‘A world of Eight Billion’.
The celebration was observed at Nongagang Auditorium Hall, Marngar, organised by the office of the Umsning Block Development Officer.
The programme was also attended by Block Development Officer R Nongrum, counselor from the office of District Medical and Health Officer, A Thabah, teachers and students from various school institutions from the Nongpoh area.
In his keynote address, Nongrum highlighted the importance of observing the day, adding that World Population Day is observed globally every year on July 11 to draw attention towards the problem of overpopulation.
The global population is expected to hit 8 billion later this year.
Nongrum said that overpopulation adversely affects the overall development of the country and has negative effects on the environment.
Science teacher at Alpha English Higher Secondary School, Nongpoh, A Wanswet and Thabah lectured on the objectives of World Population Day and the need to create awareness on overpopulation impacts. They spoke about various issues, such as the importance of family planning, poverty elimination, maternal health, human rights, child marriage, unemployment and global warming.
Meanwhile, to create awareness among local people, students and teachers from various schools took part in a rally in and around the Marngar area and the event ended with a prize distribution for the best slogan.
