The United Democratic Party (UDP), through its general secretary Jemino Mawthoh, has condemned the recent cases of assault in Shillong.
“The UDP strongly condemns these acts of violence and we want the police to be vigilant to these situations and we don’t want disturbance of peace and security in our state at any cost,” Mawthoh told reporters.
Stating that Meghalaya has always been tagged as a peaceful and very hospitable state that respects all communities, he asked, “How would we feel if our people are also victims of such violence in other states? I feel that as a God-fearing people we should fight issues in the right way and these spurts of incidents are not acceptable.”
When asked if the Home Department and police are inefficient, he said that the government should be extra cautious and vigilant to prevent such untoward incidents in the future so that there is no bad reflection of the state and the local community. The Home Department is headed by Mawthoh’s party colleague, Lahkmen Rymbui.
