Director General of Police, LR Bishnoi has said that Meghalaya police has conducted around 250 awareness programmes on drugs abuse and illicit trafficking in the State.
Addressing one such programme held at the Panaliar community hall in Jowai today, Bishnoi said that with awareness the department is hopeful to bring some changes to the youth, the society and community as a whole.
He underlined the need to curb the menace of drugs and called for coordination and cooperation from the citizens while urging youth to refrain from all forms of drugs abuse.
The awareness programme was organised by the West Jaiñtia Hills District Police in collaboration with Sein Kynjei under the Nasha Se Azadi Pakhwada to observe International Day against drugs abuse and illicit trafficking
Meanwhile, a similar awareness programme was also organised at Ladthadlaboh community hall on the theme, “Addressing drugs challenges in health and humanitarian care & crisis.”
The programme was organised by the office of the District Social Welfare Officer, Jowai in collaboration with Breakthrough Rehabilitation Centre, Khliehtyrshi.
An awareness on basic and causes of drug abuse and addiction, effects of drugs on family and individual health, Narcotics Drug and Pschotropic Substance Act, 1985 was presented by SURE coordinator, D. Bareh, Psychiatrist Mental Health Civil Hospital, Dr A. Paswet, Sub-Inspector J Syiemlieh and Secretary of the Synjuk Waheh Shnong, Jowai, RQ Laloo.
All participants also took a pledge and prizes were distributed to winners of the drawing competition.
