Shillong, Aug 31: With Meghalaya set to host the National Games, young sportspersons will get a chance to witness and interact with top athletes, West Garo Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal said on Monday.
He was speaking at the opening of the second District-Level Inter-School Games 2026 at Hawakhana Indoor Hall, Tura. Around 900 participants from 42 schools are taking part.
Aggarwal urged students to set ambitious goals and aim for national and international competitions.
The games, organised by the District Sports Office, feature eight disciplines — Volleyball, Basketball, Taekwondo, Swimming, Kabaddi, Badminton, Athletics and Table Tennis — in U-14, U-15 and U-17 categories. It will conclude on September 3.
Meghalaya State Olympic Association Working President John F Kharshiing said Meghalaya Sports Policy 2019 has created a structured pathway from school to state level with incentives and scholarships.
Assistant Director, Sports and Youth Affairs, Saljagring M Marak said inter-school competitions help build stronger sporting culture.
