A group of veterinary doctors closed down their cattle checkpoint at Umling, Ri-Bhoi, allegedly because other checkpoints tied to ‘high-level’ individuals were carrying out similar work, perhaps for dubious reasons.
The vets were meant to check and verify the health status of livestock before they enter Meghalaya. It was erected by the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department and screened cattle and buffaloes meant for consumption in Meghalaya as well as those transiting through on their way to other states.
However, on Sunday, at around 10 pm, the doctors unanimously closed the checkpost on allegations that there are some other groups who were involved in checking livestock before entering the state.
Although reporters tried to talk with the doctors and staff before they left, none of them were willing to speak to the media.
