A mega campaign on “Annadata Devo Bhava” was organised for 30 farmers from three villages of Ri Bhoi district by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra today under the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
KVK principal scientist and head Dr. Mokidul Islam welcomed the farmers and highlighted the importance of farming community for building a hunger free nation. He stressed on promotion of natural, organic and integrated farming systems, cultivation of millets for nutrition-rich plates in their household and enhancing income to sustain and create a healthy society by being self-reliant.
SMS Agronomy, Dr. Meghna Sarma informed farmers about Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, which is dedicated to the people of India for global peace and development.
SMS Home Science, Dr. Eliza. C. Syiemlieh spoke about setting up of nutritional garden for eradicating malnutrition and also stressed on establishing nutritional kitchen garden at Anganwadi centres at various locations in their villages for rural upliftment as well as mother and child care.
SMS Soil, Dr Popiha explained the various steps for reclamation of problematic soil.
An interactive session was also held for the farmers in the presence of scientists, Dr. Jayanta Layek Senior Scientist (Agronomy), Dr. C. Aochen and Dr. Phianim, Scientist of ICAR Umiam on various topics like Promotion of Natural and Organic Farming, Millet crops and its nutritional benefits, Bio- fortification, Crop Diversification etc.
The programme ended with distribution of 30 kg maize seeds and an exposure visit to organic and natural farming unit of Agronomy section, ICAR Umiam to showcase the various emerging technologies adopted for scientific cultivation.
