The Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) has demanded inquiry into sand quarrying in Rngain area of Pynursla and blasting on the road from Laitlyngkot to Pynursla resulting in landslide.
CSWO president, president Agnes Kharshiing wrote a letter to East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner in this regard and urged her to inspect and collect copies of the sand/quarrying mining plan and to inquire whether public hearing was conducted before the mining activities in this stretch of road from Laitlyngkot to Pynursla village.
“There is urgency in this matter as the landslide is continuous and could endanger many lives,” Kharshiing said.
She pointed out that from shared photos, it was known that there are frequent sand mining and quarry activities as well as blasting of huge rocks in the area, situated along the national highway which leads to frequent landslide.
On Friday, heavy rains caused landslides in the area which brough vehicular movement to a halt. “This could be dangerous if more boulders fall on top of the people who were stuck in the traffic. Residents of the nearby area, who need medical attention, get stuck in the traffic due to the landslide,” she said.
