Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) organised a panel discussion today to debate the merits of the Meghalaya budget for 2022-23.
The objective was for expert panelists from academia and practice to deliberate on the budget and also to make the students aware about the importance of knowing the major budget sectors so as to have a sound understanding about the potential future trajectory of the state economy and also an opportunity for the students to interact and discuss with the speakers.
The discussion was organised by the Econ Club of the Department of Economics, Commerce and Management on the occasion of World Economics Day.
The panel included Jemino Mawthoh, Associate Professor at North-Eastern Hill University and former MLA, Eliza Dutta, Assistant Professor of the Indian Institute of Public Health and Rosanna Lyngdoh, director of Impulse NGO Network.
A special address by VT Darlong, former Vice-Chancellor of MLCU, was also given where he spoke on the effects of the national budget on the North East and environmental concerns of the region.
All three speakers talked about the state’s allocation for healthcare and said that there should be more focus on the public health sector. Mawthoh discussed green development, the power sector and youth unemployment.
Lyngdoh provided information about the overview of welfare schemes and she stressed that the state budget did not include certain schemes regarding climate change or the elderly.
