NPP MDC, Rakesh Sangma is all set to lead the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) as the Chief Executive Member (CEM) by defeating former CEM, Benedic Marak.
Sangma won the position by securing 15 votes with the deputy chairman, Albinush Marak not required to vote. Marak secured 13 votes.
The NPP MDC from Babelapara had resigned as the Chairman of GHADC on Saturday to contest for the CEM election after Marak was ousted following his defeat in the no confidence motion against him by his fellow NPP MDCs.
During the voting today, Marak was supported by nine of the AITC MDCs, two BJP MDCs.
The political turmoil in GHADC began after Marak dropped three MDCs from the posts of chairmen. Later, nine Executive Members resigned from the Executive Committee accusing Marak of aligning with the opposition Trinamool.
