The public hearing conducted by the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) on limestone mining project by the Star Cement Company concluded peacefully in Lumshnong today.
The board also conducted the hearing on installation of 3.3 MTPA by the company to increase production of clinker up to 3.3 lakh metric tons and cement to 2.0 lakh metric tons annually.
Waheh Shnong of Lumshnong, Monlang Ladong stood in support of the company and said the Star cement has worked towards development of the area and its people. He said Lumshnong and its adjacent villages will lend support to the company.
Opposition was from the pressure groups like the Jaiñtia Students Union (JSU) and Khasi Students Union (KSU).
JSU secretary, Treiborlang Suchen said development must come for public representatives and questioned the motive of those in support of the expansion project of the company when the district lacks hospital and a college.
KSU Narpuh circle president, K. S. Suchiang said the organisation is opposed to the project as it will harm the environment.
Echoing similar views Ribanroi Bareh of Umlong opposed project stating that it will affect the health of the inhabitants of Umlong since the lime quarry is adjacent to the village.
She stated that the pollution board has given the clearance as 100 per cent of the inhabitants of the Lumshnong are in support of the project, but forget to take the consent of the areas adjacent to it, that are at risks.
East Jaiñtia Hills Deputy Commissioner, Abilash Barnawal said the proceedings of the public hearing will be sent to the central government for a final decision.
