Editor,
It has been a regular routine lately for the locality of Mawlai Umshorshor to be in darkness after 6 pm. Firstly, there are no street lights or solar street lamps in the locality. Secondly, there is a regular unannounced power cut in the locality almost every day or alternate day after 6 pm.
Residents are aware that it is impossible to find paths in the dark without good street lighting. People especially women and youths who have late evening jobs or return from their jobs and girl students returning from tuition after 6 pm feel scared to walk because of darkness.
The narrow lanes and streets which manage to get some brightness from the lights of the houses and compounds of the generous residents are becoming pitch black due to the power cuts. Thanks to a few generous residents who took the extra burden to install inverter lights at the gates to ensure safety and security of the residents of the locality who used these lanes to reach their homes after returning from their daily walks of life.
The dark streets may be a perfect place for people who use the cover of darkness to their advantage. Men, women and youths may feel uncomfortable to walk in these areas with inadequate lighting. Street lighting and improved power supply is important for the safety and security of residents.
It is my humble request to all concerned authorities to look into the frequent power cuts at Mawlai Umshorshor and consider installation of solar street lamps in Mawlai
Umshorshor and other dark streets of Mawlai Town.
