Health Minister, James K Sangma today assured striking employees of the 108 ambulance service that the government will not renew the GVK contract, which ends on March 31.
108 employees under the banner of Meghalaya EMRI Workers Union (MEMRIWU) met the Health Minister James Sangma on their demands.
While they came away with the sort of assurances they wanted, the workers will not be calling off their strike until they receive written assurance on the matter.
MEMRIWU Joseph Pyngrope told Highland Post that the minister has assured the delegation that the state government will not renew the GVK contract, which ends on March 31.
“Sangma has also assured us that job security for all existing employees will be absorbed by whoever takes over the emergency service going forth,” he said, adding that, for now, they will bear with the minimum wage salaries that the government had enhanced from an additional fund and see about the matter only after March 31.
The workers have been striking since January 3 in protest against their unfulfilled demands, which include ending the contract with the private GVK firm and assuring them of job security.
