The ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) today connected 75 farmers from Ri Bhoi and West Khasi Hills district and 15 staff to participate in a virtual address by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the “National Conclave on Natural Farming.”
The Prime Minister highlighted the steps taken by the government in the last seven years for the benefit of farmers, saying they will transform the agriculture sector.
He said that farming should be taken out of the chemistry lab and connected with nature’s own laboratory.
“From seed to soil, you can treat everything in a natural way. Natural farming does not involve spending on fertilisers nor on pesticides. It also requires less irrigation and is capable of dealing with floods and droughts,” said Modi.
He added that natural farming will help India’s farmers become self-reliant.
After the virtual watch of the telecast, a field visit cum demonstration was undertaken led by Dr. V.K. Mishra, Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Dr. S. Hazarika, Head, Division of System Research and Engineering, Dr. Mokidul Islam, Head, KVK Ri-Bhoi.
Dr. J. Layek, Scientist (Agronomy) demonstrated small farm implements for zero till furrow opener for growing second crop in rice fallow. He also explained about the Integrated Organic Farming System research at Agronomy sections lowland research field to the farmers.
