Locals in Mutong village under East Jaiñtia Hills district has come together to celebrate the Dung-Kho-Ner festival for the first time.
The festival also known as Dung-Khaw-Shira which commenced today revolves around the traditional way of pounding rice by the community. Villagers will flatten the rice in their traditional wooden mortar and pestle and this builds the spirit of togetherness and strengthens the bond in the community.
As per the locals, pounding of rice known as khaw shira will enliven this unique tradition passed on from their forefathers.
This is the first time that the festival is being organised by the Mutong Tourism Promotion and Environment Protection Society which will conclude on November 30.
The festival will also showcase the traditional way of pounding turmeric, archery and games, sharing of food and drinks the farmer’s way besides others.
A night-football match for women will also be an attraction during the five-day festival comprising of four teams (Mukhaialong versus Lumshyrmit and Rynji Fall versus Moopun Falls).
