The Division of Animal and Fisheries Science (DAFS) ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam in collaboration with KVK today organized a national campaign on ‘Antimicrobial Resistance in fish which was attended by 22 farmers from different parts of Ri-Bhoi district.
In the program, the relevance of the campaign was discussed in details with the farmers.
Dr. S.K. Das, Principal Scientist talked about the Antimicrobial Resistance issues occurring in fisheries and aquaculture and urged the fish farmers to harness the natural immunity of fish like secretion of slimes instead of the use of antibiotics when disease outbreak occurs in fish.
Dr. S. Ghatak, Principal Scientist delivered a lecture on the rationale use of antibiotics in Livestock and Aquaculture production with emphasize on the use of antibiotics when there is a strong need and also advised the farmers to follow certain retention period after the antibiotic treatment so that minimum residues remain leftover in the final products.
The farmers were also informed about the emerging issues of antimicrobial resistance in aquaculture which is causing an emergency alarm for future. They were also advised to opt for herbal medicines, immuno-stimulants, probiotics, prebiotics, bio-security measures, etc instead of antibiotic use.
Meanwhile, a three day training cum exposure visit on integrated farming system for framers of South Garo Hills district concluded today.
Organised by the Division of Technology Assessment cum Capacity Building in collaboration with NABARD, a total of 23 women farmers participated in the training.
The objective of the training was to acquaint and educate the farmers about the different components of the Integrated farming System (IFS) models and its prospects in doubling the farmer’s income.
