A mega mela assessment camp was organised today at the office of the East Jaiñtia Hills deputy commissioner in Khliehriat to provide support, services and schemes for persons with disabilities (PWDs).
The camp was aimed to educate, inform and encourage the family members of PWDs to come forward in order to get the necessary help provided by the government.
During the camp, 243 PWDs registered themselves out of which, 94 PWDs received the Unique Disability ID (UDID card)/Disability Certificate while there 21 who enrolled for the CM scheme. Five PWDs received the Covid-19 vaccine and 39 of them enrolled for Aadhaar Card.
The camp was organised by the District Disability Rehabilitation Centre, Jowai in collaboration with the office of the East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner and the office of the District Social Welfare Officer.
MDC of Khliehriat-Rymbai, F Bareh who attended the camp emphasised on the need for every citizen to get vaccinated against Covid-19 and called upon the people to raise awareness on the importance of the vaccine and to encourage others to get it to reduce the risk of getting infected and spreading the virus.
Additional Deputy Commissioner, S. S. Syiemlieh spoke on the importance of Aadhaar enrollment and urged families of PWDs to get themselves enrolled as well as their children, who have attained the age of five years so they can avail the various welfare schemes from government departments.
Syiemlieh also laid stress on the need for vaccination as an effective weapon to fight Covid-19.
Earlier, Dr. P. Pyrtuh, District Nodal Officer, DRC, Ialong Civil Hospital, Jowai in his introductory speech informed that the camp is organized for disability assessment, issuance of disability certificate, Aadhaar card enrollment and Covid-19 vaccination.
He also informed that the PWD Act 2016 of India has identified 21 types of disability and according to the guidelines of the Act, a person having disability of 40 per cent and above will be eligible for issuance of Unique Disability ID (UDID card)/Disability Certificate. He also elaborated on the procedures and document required for obtaining the certificate.
