The A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) is up against the reported move of the district administration to name a road in North Garo Hills after a martyred CRPF jawan.
According to the organisation, they had learnt that North Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, RP Marak has decided to name a road after the jawan martyred in Jharkhand by Naxalites.
“The organization while appreciating and honouring the martyred jawan, however depreciates the action of the Deputy Commissioner of North Garo Hills who has taken people of Garo Hills for a ride,” AHAM chief organising secretary Cherian G Momin in a statement today said.
“If the Deputy Commissioner is engrossed in naming of the roads in Garo Hills, he can start by filling in the martyrs from legends of Garo and leaders such as Pa Sonaram R Sangma, Pa Togan Nengminja, and Pa Capt. Williamson A. Sangma and so on and so forth,” Momin said.
He felt that the Deputy Commissioner should have taken the consent of all the Garo people in the district including intellects and elders before taking the decision.
“Due to British administrative legacy there is too much of non-Garo names inside Garo Hills. We feel that it is high time that all the nomenclatures of the streets, localities and villages in Garo Hills are changed into its original name as there is a pan India movement with regards to that and our Khasi and Mizo brothers have taught the importance of local nomenclature of streets, roads, localities and villages,” he added.
AHAM further urged the administration to take corrective measures and urged civil societies to rake up the issue for the betterment of Garo Hills.
