Members of various organisations from Dainadubi area of North Garo Hills district today met the Deputy Commissioner to seek repair of the Gairon bridge that connects Kharkutta village.
The GSU, GSMC, AAYF, AHAM, PJAC, DCYO, AGPF and NGHPWO told the DC that the bridge, which is an important landmark, has been damaged to the extent that vehicles are unable to move through.
The subway that has been made nearby to help people and vehicles get across too has been damaged due to the rains. People have been seen helping vehicles to cross the small river that runs under the now defunct bridge, they said.
The organisations, through the memo, have also requested the immediate construction of a subway across the River Chil on which the Gairong bridge is built.
“The bridge is on the verge of collapse and if it does it is going to cause a grave problem for the people of the area. It is one of the only ways of connecting to two sections of the district and thousands would be affected. We have also informed the chief minister of the problem and the matter of the bridge repair will possibly be taken up soon. He has not responded yet to our pleas,” they added.
