Another grim milestone was reached today, with Meghalaya’s death toll due to the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic crossing 1,000.
Statewide, there were 524 new cases today, 709 recoveries and seven fatalities. The death toll since April 2021 hit 1,004, which is 87 percent of Meghalaya’s total of 1,154 lives lost to Covid-19 (since April 2020). An average of just under eight people per day have died since April 1 this year of the coronavirus.
Three deaths today were in East Khasi Hills, three in West Khasi Hills and one in East Garo Hills. Six of the seven were unvaccinated, the Health Department informed.
East Khasi Hills recorded 271 new cases today (highest since July 27), West Garo Hills 63, Ri-Bhoi 55, West Jaiñtia Hills 53, West Khasi Hills 50, South West Garo Hills eight, East Garo Hills seven, East Jaiñtia Hills seven, South Garo Hills four, South West Khasi Hills three and North Garo Hills three.
East Khasi Hills accounted for 244 recoveries, Ri-Bhoi 136, West Garo Hills 86, West Jaiñtia Hills 67, West Khasi Hills 63, South West Khasi Hills 53, East Jaiñtia Hills 29, South West Garo Hills nine, East Garo Hills nine, South Garo Hills seven and North Garo Hills six.
There are now 5,323 active Covid-19 cases in the state. East Khasi Hills alone accounts for 2,149 active cases, West Khasi Hills 844, West Garo Hills 705, West Jaiñtia Hills 534, Ri-Bhoi 503, South West Khasi Hills 230, East Jaiñtia Hills 86, North Garo Hills 80, East Garo Hills 72, South Garo Hills 63 and South West Garo Hills 57.
In all, Meghalaya has had 68,631 Covid-19 cases, of which 5,323 are active, 62,154 have recovered and 1,154 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has risen to 90.56 percent. The fatality rate stayed level at 1.68 percent. The seven-day rolling average for new cases dropped to 518.71 and decreased for new deaths to 9.86.
